summary
Subaru Sumeragi, a 16 year old Spiritualist and 13th head of the Sumeragi clan, is called by Mr. Mimura of the MCC Corperation to investigate a potential curse placed on his special project, Project 5. Subaru accepts this job, as it is his duty to clean Tokyo of curses. But sadly for Subaru, he is never allowed to investigate because Mr. Mimura ends up dead in a freak elevator accident. Now in his place is a Mr. Nagumo, who coldly disregards Mr. Mimura's death as a stepping stone for success for the company and Project 5.
Subaru, thinking the death was strange, sets about to investigate the curse on his own. One night, he sees hears a dog and sees Kazami, who he had met earlier at the vet clinic of his older friend Seishirou. It became clear to him that Kazami was setting these curses on the building, though he didn't know why. Also obvious was that her curses were wrong, and could potentially harm her.
On his way leaving the building site, Subaru runs into Detective Yamakawa, who informs him of Nagumo's suspicious survival of all accidents. This is when Subaru reaches the conclusion that Nagumo could possibly possess the gift of protection from curses, and this allows him to even cheat death. Yamakawa, wanting to find a rational explination for what has happened, is determined to find proof that Nagumo has caused these deaths so that he can be arrested and held accountable.
Subaru finds Kazami to tell her to stop putting the curses on, they are all wrong. She refuses, telling him the story about how her brother died when both he and Nagumo fell from a roof. Nagumo lived, falling into a net, and she was convinced that Nagumo was the cause of her brother's death. So, because of that, she would not stop placing her curses, but would try to correct her mistakes. This sets Subaru off into a tizzy of worry. After they speak, Kazami decides to sacrifice the life of her dog Koni to sic his spirit on Nagumo. Burying the body on the site, Kazami faints and is taken to the hospital by Detective Yamakawa, who is investigating the company building.
The spirit of Koni is released, but, perhaps because of Nagumo's special gift or Kazami's inaccurate curses, the spirit possesses Nagumo and seems to do his bidding! Nagumo proves this by making the spirit kill Detective Yamakawa. Subaru races to the building when he finds out what Kazami has done, coming face to face with a Nagumo who informs him that he is the rightful head of the project since fate had obviously chosen him as the strongest. Subaru gets into a battle with him, and it ends with Subaru getting knocked out.
How lucky for Subaru then that Seishirou appears and mercilessly attacks Nagumo with a sheet of broken glass that pierces holes into him. Nagumo, seriously wounded by the attack, falls from the ledge he is on to his death.
